Analysis

Let’s use the Track Titan software to compare a community driver to the HYMO driver through Cascades (Turn 3). This is a long, fast left hander so it requires trail braking, and a delicate touch on the brake pedal.

We can see from the braking data that the HYMO driver (in light blue) brakes slightly earlier than the community driver, however they also use trail braking, keeping a small amount of brake input through the majority of the corner. This helps to rotate the car through the corner while keeping up speed. The community driver on the other hand doesn’t use trail braking. This means they don’t have as much rotation, meaning they can’t get on the throttle as early, giving them a worse exit out of the corner and down the next straight. This causes them to lose around 0.25 seconds through this corner.

Hot Laps Top Tips

This analysis has highlighted one fundamental technique for competitive driving and that is trail braking. Not every corner will require you to use this technique, but the simple act of not coming off the brake in the right manner has cost the community driver over two tenths of a second.

Getting your braking technique is one of the most important aspects of hot lapping. Try different levels of trail braking if necessary and find what works best for you, the car and the track. Remember, practice makes perfect!
