Max Verstappen vs Sergio Perez - Race Engineer Analysis

We decided to put real-life f1 data into Track Titan to analyse exactly how drivers differ from each other. Here, we're taking a look at how Max Verstappen was quicker than Sergio Perez in 2023.

This example is from Abu Dhabi qualifying, specifically the turns 6 and 7 chicane. Max is in Green and Sergio is in blue. What’s really interesting here is how Max can brake later and come off the throttle sooner than Sergio and still hit his lowest speed first.

The deceleration advantage Max has is mainly due to his downshifting technique. Sergio shifts down to 5th gear, waits and then shifts down to second to take the corner. Max basically shifts from eighth to second in one go, meaning he’s using more engine braking to help slow down the car. This enables him to get back on the throttle sooner and that allows him to gain time on the corner exit.

On the whole, Max is more decisive with his inputs. He makes a decision and sticks with it. This means the car doesn’t act unexpectedly and he can plan ahead.
