McLaren 720s EVO GT3 Silverstone HYMO Hot Lap Analysis

Let’s take a look at this hot lap of Silverstone in the McLaren 720s EVO GT3 driven by HYMO.

The Track

Silverstone Circuit, located in Northamptonshire, England, is one of the most iconic racetracks in the world of motorsport. Known for its high-speed corners and long straights, it's a favourite among drivers and fans alike. Silverstone has a rich history, famously hosting the first-ever Formula One World Championship race in 1950. The track layout, featuring famous sections like the Maggots-Becketts complex and the Hangar Straight, challenges drivers with its blend of fast, flowing sections and technical corners. This blend makes Silverstone a benchmark for aerodynamic and handling performance in race cars.

Analysis

The analysis below uses the Track Titan platform to compare a HYMO reference hotlap to one of the Track Titan community drivers at Brooklands. You can see below that the reference driver in blue actually brakes earlier, which initially costs them time to the community lap. However, the community driver carry's too much speed into the corner, slightly misses the apex and runs wide on the exit. This compromises the entry for the following right hander and means they have to slow up more on the tighter line on the way out. The net result is a 0.1s penalty in lap time.

Hot Laps Top Tips

In sim racing, handling balance is vital for performance. Smooth and precise control over the virtual vehicle is essential. Understand your car's dynamics in the simulator, whether it has a tendency for oversteer or understeer, and adjust your driving style to manage it. Utilise throttle and brake inputs skilfully to shift the car's balance, improving cornering grip. Techniques like trail braking or throttle steering can be effective in maintaining a balanced car. Balancing the car correctly in various situations, such as high-speed corners or tight chicanes, is key to faster lap times and better overall control.
